Cutting w/ Router Bits

Cutting with Router Bits: Hand-Held Router or CNC Machine

At Kinon, we use hand-held routers for standard lamination trim removal and CNC machines for precision-cut parts. You can choose router profiles that best fit your desired design.

Sealing Exposed Wood After Cutting

When cutting a wood substrate such as MDF or plywood surfaced with Kinon®, it is essential to seal the exposed wood. This is a standard practice for all laminate wood composites to prevent expansion, contraction, and material issues. The most effective sealing methods include:

Edge-Banding Options

  • Apply PUR adhesive using an edge bander.
  • Use standard edge-banding materials such as PVC, acrylic, or Kinon® Ultra Cast in a color and pattern that matches your design.

Sealing with Epoxy or Urethane

  • Apply a clear or colored epoxy or urethane sealer to protect exposed edges and surfaces.

Balancing Large Panels

For large exposed surfaces, such as the back of a panel, MDF, plywood, particleboard, or a wood door surfaced with Kinon® on one side:

  • Laminate the opposing side with either HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) or Kinon® Ultra Cast.
  • Use a PUR adhesive to improve balance and sealing performance.

Why Sealing is Crucial

Leaving wood edges or surfaces unsealed can lead to:

  • Excessive expansion and contraction.
  • Warping or deterioration of the wood.
  • Adhesion issues with the Kinon® surface or other materials.

By following these best practices, you can ensure durability and long-term performance for your Kinon® surfaces.
