Cutting Kinon® with Standard Woodworking Tools
Kinon® panels are engineered to cut cleanly and consistently using conventional woodworking equipment. Whether working with MDF substrates or UltraCast™ laminate, fabrication is straightforward with the right tools and blades.
Recommended Tools
Table saws & sliding table saws
Miter saws
Hand-held track saws
Vertical panel saws
Band saws
Jigsaws
CNC machines
Drills with Forstner, twist, or countersink bits
Best Practices
Always use laminate-grade carbide-tipped blades for optimal results.
Cut slowly and evenly to minimize chipping.
Support panels properly during cuts to prevent stress or breakage.
Maintain sharp blades and bits for the cleanest finish.
⚠ Safety Notice: Fabrication should be performed by trained professionals using proper safety equipment and procedures.
Sealing Exposed Wood After Cutting
After cutting a wood substrate such as MDF or plywood surfaced with Kinon®, it is essential to seal the exposed wood. This is a standard practice for laminate wood composites to prevent expansion, contraction, and adhesion issues.
Why Sealing is Essential
Leaving exposed wood unsealed can cause excessive expansion and contraction, leading to:
- Material warping or delamination
- Structural instability
- Adhesion failure
Proper sealing ensures long-term durability, stability, and aesthetic integrity of Kinon® surfaces.
Recommended Sealing Methods:
Recommended Sealing Methods:
1. Edge-Banding with PUR Adhesive
- Applied using an edge bander.
- Standard edge-banding materials include PVC, acrylic, or Kinon® Ultra Cast, chosen to match your design.
2. Epoxy or Urethane Sealer
- Can be applied in clear or color-matched finishes for added protection.
Balancing Large Exposed Wood Surfaces
- When working with MDF, plywood, particleboard, or wood doors surfaced with Kinon® on one side, laminate the opposite side with either:
- HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) or
- Kinon® Ultra Cast.
- Use PUR adhesive to improve balance and durability.
